I provide integrative, relational and contemporary psychodynamic psychotherapy for adults, couples, and college students. My theoretical orientation incorporates a variety of contemporary approaches to psychotherapy. It is an approach tailored to meet the unique needs of each client. These approaches include self-psychological, object relational, interpersonal/relational and somatic mind/body perspectives.
My psychotherapeutic work is grounded in Trauma Theory, IFS & Systems Theory, Attachment Theory, Contemporary Psychodynamic Theory, Dissociative Theories and research in Brain Health and Neuroscience. I can integrate models of dissociation and parts-work in combination with EMDR when useful for trauma reprocessing.
As a psychotherapist that is trained in somatic therapy methods, I am open to the use of techniques that can work with the mind-brain/body interface to promote neurophysiological reorganization and plasticity. Some of these include: Somatic Experiencing, Somatic Archaeology, and EMDR.
Psychodynamic psychotherapy is based on the observation that individuals are often unaware of the factors that determine their emotions and behavior. Because these factors are unconscious, the advice of friends and family, the reading of self-help books, or even the most determined efforts will often fail to provide enough insight, integration and relief. My approach to psychotherapy treatment explores how these unconscious factors affect current relationships and patterns of thought, emotion and behavior. In sessions, we reflect and focus on tracing parts and patterns back to their historical origins, consider how they got there and developed over time to more deeply understand the realities of current life challenges, issues and situations.
From the beginning of therapy, I work with my clients to build up a safe and trusting relationship that enables them to experience aspects of his or her inner life that have been exiled and hidden because they are painful, shameful, confusing, terrifying or very stress-provoking.
Although different from my basic approach to psychotherapy, I am open to using skills and techniques informed by Schema Therapy, Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy/Journaling when helpful.
I am happy to discuss any of these approaches with you as part of a collaborative and integrative process.
